MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING: INTRODUCTION - UPDATE
MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING: INTRODUCTION - UPDATE
Two-day workshop
Date: Mon 22nd & Tues 23rd July 2013
Lead trainers: William R. Miller, Albuquerque, New Mexico & Stephen Rollnick, Cardiff, Wales
Venue: Swalec Stadium, Cardiff, Wales
This is a repeat one-off opportunity to learn about motivational interviewing (MI), and the latest developments, from its two co-founders, William R. Miller from Albuquerque, New Mexico & Stephen Rollnick from Cardiff, Wales. Professor Miller will return to Cardiff after a successful workshop in 2012. This will be of interest to both to newcomers and those more familiar with MI. A streaming system will be used to ensure that those relatively new to MI will get good opportunity to practice basic skills. It will provide:
- Clarification about the common and unique elements of MI
- A focus on client change language and how it guides the practice of MI
- An update on theory and research
- The presentation of a new 4-process framework for MI that allows for easier integration in diverse settings
- Opportunity to practice core skills for evoking motivation to change
William R. Miller, Ph.D. is Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico. He introduced the clinical method of MI in 1983, and with Dr. Stephen Rollnick authored the seminal text, Motivational Interviewing (1991 and 2002), now published in 14 languages. He has published over 40 books and 400 professional articles and chapters, and the Institute for Scientific Information lists him as one of the world’s most cited scientists.
Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and Professor of Health Care Communication at the Institute of Primary Care and Public Health, Wales. He was a practicing psychologist in the UK National Health Service for 16 years, and has a special interest in hospital and primary care settings. He pioneered the application of MI in health care, and has trained practitioners in diverse settings and cultures. A co-developer of MI, he is senior author of Motivational Interviewing in Health Care (2008), already published in six languages.

Swiss Addiction Research Day VI
Dear Colleagues,
The sixth edition of the SSAM Swiss Addiction Research Day (SARD) will take place in Montreux on September 13, 2013.
This year the event will be held jointly with the annual congress of the SSPPEA and SSPP (SGKJPP and SGPP; http://www.swisspsycongress.ch/). This is a great opportunity to meet in a multidisciplinary congress on psychiatry and psychotherapy with a specific addiction perspective and to exchange experiences, points of view and practices with a broad range of professionals in the field.
To adapt to the framework of the SSPPEA & SSPP congress, the schedule of the SARD will be slightly reduced with respect to the preceding editions. A jazz dinner party will be held on Thursday 12 September. Details of the venue will be provided later on.
For this special day, you are most welcome to submit an abstract in view of an oral presentation or a poster at the SARD VI.
Registration and submission of abstracts can be completed online (http://www.ssam.ch/SSAM/abstracts). Abstracts must be limited to max. 250 words. The organizers will review all submitted proposals and notify their decision to the authors.
The SARD is free, but a registration at the SGKJPP & SGPP is necessary. Furher informations will be precised.
Deadline for submission of abstracts is June 15, 2013.
Specialists with no oral or poster presentations are welcome, provided that they are interested in developing research projects on addiction.
Please pass on the information to colleagues who might be interested in contributing to the meeting.
Looking forward to see you in Montreux!
Best regards from the SSAM’s Scientific Council.
